Dr. Hyde will discuss how genetic variants increase the risk for disorders such as autism, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He will also discuss the interface between environmental and genetic risk factors. Finally, he will talk about studies of the brain at the Lieber Institute, dedicated to understanding the biology of a wide range of brain disorders, and developing new and better treatments. Soon, treatments of brain disorders will be selected based on the biology of each individual’s disorder, much like chemotherapy of cancer now is chosen on the basis of the genetic characteristics of each individual’s tumor.
