Stories from Madeleine Albright’s Jewel Box

With Dr. Nancy E. Zinn, Senior Curator

National Museum of American Diplomacy, US Department of State

Friday, November 18, 10:30-11:30 am

Discover how the first woman to become US Secretary of State used her jewelry collection to make diplomatic history. Madeleine Albright’s pins were tools of political persuasion that became part of her “personal diplomatic arsenal.” Enjoy viewing highlights of her collection and hearing the compelling, often humorous, stories they tell about one of America’s most accomplished and fascinating diplomats. This presentation will feature brooches from a new exhibit on Albright’s diplomatic legacy currently under development at the National Museum of American Diplomacy. Albright was famous for wearing pins to express moods, to tell stories, and to share experiences up until the day she died in March at the age of 84.

Madeleine Korbel Albright came to the US as an 11-year-old political refugee from Czechoslovakia. Her family, which was Jewish, narrowly avoided extermination at the hands of the Nazis. Decades later she was an ardent and effective advocate against mass atrocities in Eastern Europe. Albright was appointed American Ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997, a position she held until her elevation to Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001.
