The Frist Museum (Nashville, TN) has a beautiful exhibit which we will learn about on this special Zoom tour. Driven by U.S Government policy and economic opportunity, the American Westward expansion took place in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Artists, mostly Euro-American men, ventured westward to capture the “new frontier”. Their paintings were inspired images of the Wild West and daring, adventurous men as well as an often romanticized or idealized images of the indigenous people who inhabited these lands for many hundreds of years. The artists who were often adventurers or artist/explorers themselves helped visually reinforce the Doctrine of Manifest Destiny- an American frontier ripe for the taking-- the divine justification for the white man’s domination of the whole of America, a philosophy firmly established in the mid-1800’s.

The current show at the Frist Museum of Art, Creating the American West in Art, consists of some 80 paintings and bronze sculptures.  They are from the Petrie Institute of Western American Art – founded in 2001 and a major part of the Denver Art Museum’s western art collection. The works of art date from 1822 to 1946. Our virtual tour will take us through this historical period touching on several styles and focusing on how the image of the west changed as American identity changed.
